The Value of our work

We have provided this information in order that heads, teachers and commissioners can see why organisations choose to work with us. We have tried to keep it simple and show you the 4 areas that should give you confidence in what we can achieve together. If you have any questions, do contact john@songwritingcharity.org.

The information on this page assumes that, at this stage, you know that we work with children to write songs. Hopefully you have responded positively to a video or audio recording of the work or a colleague has recommended us. Perhaps you are now looking to get 'under the bonnet' a bit, and see what impact we have and why we're doing it. Here goes:

How do the children benefit?

Curriculum

'Song/Writing Charity'

*From: The National Curriculum in England, Key stages 1 and 2 framework document

We understand that work in schools needs to be relevant to the children's learning and development. Click on the reports on the left to see the detailed breakdown showing the National Curriculum requirements that our one-day workshops address.

Besides this statistical overview, it is typical for teachers to comment on how children who struggle to access the curriculum in traditional lessons, find a way in through one our workshops. Others find freedom and validation in applying their achievements in core-curriculum learning to the creative songwriting process.

We have erred on the side of underestimation and stuck with only things that we intentionally cover.

Outcomes

We have 60,000 answers worth of measurable outcomes across 5 programmes collected so far. Just 2 examples include:

we see an average 23.8%

positive shift in their pride in

literacy achievements for those

with SEND
and an average 38.6%

positive shift in enthusiasm for

singing for those eligible for the

Pupil Premium
all in just one day.

The impact of all of our one-day workshops is measured using specially designed forms (huge thanks to Dr. V Warburton at RPXP) that ask questions of the children before the workshops starts and at the end, allowing schools to report on the impact of the investment.

We are here to help children build resilience, improve health and wellbeing and boost their confidence to enable them to learn more at every key stage in their education. The measures we conduct are focussed on our impacts in this respect.

Legacy

Every group of children we work with will write and record a song.
Every recording is uploaded to SoundCloud (free to play and download).
Every school has that legacy.

For extra impact a majority of schools opt to have a video made. Commonly, schools play the song in assembly and share it via newsletters with parents and the community etc..

We hear of all kinds of extended project work happening in schools once we have left. These include:
  • Whole school singing assemblies
  • DVD and CDs sold by the PTA to raise funds for new resources
  • Regional Radio interviews
  • Using the song as a stimulus for PSHE, music and literacy lessons.
  • Concert performances of the song (Including at the Millennium Stadium and Gloucester Cathedral)

A couple of legacy examples here on our blog:
